There is a very special place located just one hour north of Ann Arbor – The Flint Institute of Art has become one of my family’s favorite free-day destinations. Right now until July 30th, the FIA is hosting an incredible exhibit - Rodin: The Human Experience. This exhibit celebrates the 100th anniversary of the icon’s death. Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was considered the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo.
My sister, Debbie, daughter, Leah, (right, from an early visit) and I went to the FIA a couple of weeks ago. We were able to view 45 bronze sculptures that illustrate Rodin’s passion for portraying movement and spirit in the human body. On the day we went, a Friday afternoon, we were the only three people in the Rodin exhibit for most of the time. There is an excellent audio tour that really adds to the experience. We learned a lot about the life and work of this artist icon.
I love the museum’s permanent works, as well, which include art spanning 5,000 years. There are thousands of pieces to view in their American, European, African, Asian and Art of the Americas collections in 18 beautifully organized galleries.
We like to eat at the café right near the front lobby. Their paninis and soup are always tasty and are reasonably priced. If you have time after going to the museum, you can also visit the Sloan Museum, Longway Planetarium, and Whiting Auditorium which are all located within two blocks. I’ve heard really great things about the Sloan’s current exhibit on the Titanic.
Right next door to the FIA is the Flint Public Library, one of my very favorite places to go when I was a kid. My sister, Debbie, was actually a featured storyteller there when I was little. The library has interesting children’s activities, talks and workshops throughout the year.
During the week, admission to the FIA is $7 for adults and $5 for children. On Saturdays, the museum is completely free. There is free and easy parking and the museum is located on the Flint Cultural Center campus, located right off I-475. I also have to mention that the staff at the FIA is always incredibly friendly and helpful. I highly recommend spending a day at this wonderful museum – you’ll be hooked!
